Our Journey Continues:

I apologize as my financial situation does not allow me to provide a phone number as I don’t have one. My only contact with the world besides face to face is through the internet.

What you have described sounds easy enough, I will be awaiting your following email with the sample letter for me to send as the application of claim.

I look forward to hearing from you.

If that is the case, then the best option to complete this transaction will be face to face meeting. Are you prepared to come down to my country? Let me know.

Dr. Harold Akaego

What country might this be? My schedule here is very tight as I am in the middle of some big contracts. I don’t think that i would be able to make it down there any time soon. This seems like a time sensitive situation so this doesn’t seem like it can happen. And you must understand with the magnitude of this request I would feel more safe and confident in you if you made the trip here and we discussed this matter further. What do you think?

Mr.Mackenzie Chiu,

The country is Ivory Coast, please consult your google map for more information. It is unfortunate that you are not getting along with me,you have a big contract and you also claimed that you do not have a telephone number..I am wondering why you are not serious.

The project is here in my country and in every aspect,it is here in my country that we are suppose to meet to talk more.If you are interested then come down to see things for yourself, action speak lounder than words.

Dr. Harold AKAEGO

You must realize I’m being so methodical and careful about this situation. It is not every day that people email me out of the blue and offer me millions of dollars. And now, you want me to fly all the way to the Ivory Coast with no knowledge of your own seriousness? I think it is only fair that I feel that you are being honest in your words… No? You have everything to gain in this situation and I am putting alot on the line. Especially when when i get down there, I don’t even know if Mr. Rudi Marc Chui or Mr. Ron Marlon Chiu is supposed to be my grandfather in this debacle… YOU IDIOT… get your details straight and then go scam someone else….

After which I didn’t think he was gonna reply back… and for about a week he didn’t… but then…..

Dear Mr. Mackenzie Chiu

I have not been able to contact you again because you insulted my person. You can understand that this world is a small place and for the fact that I made a mistake when I wrote my second mail does not mean that you have to call me an idiot. You should have respected me and atleats ask for evidence of the deposit portfolio to ascertain the true position of what I have proposed to you.I am a family man and of course I am to be careful when I write you considering the nature of deal that I have offered you.To be honest to you I am just a simple man  and when this opportunity came knocking at my door,I had to think of its risk and benefit  and then I said to myself if I choose to contact you and you refuse my offer then it may put me into problem and on the other hands if you choose to work with me,then it is a rear blessing to me.

I purposely made that mistake to ascertain if you are the true person that I contacted.I had expected you to come back to me correcting me of this error but what you did was to insult me.I am not offended at all but had to stop writing you because I am afraid of what will be the consequences of my decision to contact you.You email from the first one has not helped me take the right decision.

All that I can say here is that I am prepared to work with you and can ever re forward the same mail that I sent you before.I have the deposit portfolio related document to proof that I am with you but will not do so until I am convinced by you that you are with me.You can understand that you have not cooperated as I had expected, you have refered to my mail as scam and even refused to give me your telephone number, all this has made me to take your email response as a joke.

If you desire to talk to me then I will make available a telephone number for your use.The name of the deceased is Mr.Ron Marlon Chiu.

Mr. Harold AKAEGO,

You must understand that I am going through the same things that you are. I am also a simple man and simple men do not normally go around or receive millions of dollars in the mail every day. We both have the same thing to lose in this situation, if I decide to throw all my faith in you and contact you with information, and if this IS a scam then you have the ability to take away my livelihood. And if it isn’t a scam and you decide to put all your faith in me then I have the ability to take away YOUR livelihood by going to the authorities.

It is for this reason that you must understand why I am being so careful. I apologize if I offended you in any way but, my last email was also a test, my thought was that my last email would have deterred any true scam as they would not have replied to me anymore. You have showed me, through your reply, that i can have a little more faith in your intentions.

I just have a couple more questions, you said in this previous email that you made a mistake at 1st and then in the next paragraph you you said that you purposely made that mistake, making it not a mistake to begin with. So was it a mistake? And in previous emails you have told me that you do not like discussing business in emails and yet you go ahead and disclose the process through a reply to me. For something that is so dangerous to your career and livelihood you do not seem to concerned about making these small mistakes.

I am going to propose how we continue with this process, since you are the controlling person for this account and you have the ability to gain the money yourself without me. Since you have already proposed a face to face meeting, I propose that you fly me down to your country so that we can meet face to face and discuss this further. I feel that if you are willing to proceed in this manner it will ensure to me that you are serious about proceeding with me and that this is not a scam.

To which I have not heard a reply from yet after about 7 days. Funny isn’t it? Thoughts or comments? feel free. Later Days!

Case Study: 21sCentury Scamming pt.2a

9 07 2009

OK, so, previously I wrote about this dude that contacted me through photography forum that I joined offering me millions of euros. I found out after my 1st post that it was a well known scam called “the Nigerian 419 Scam” or something. As you know I decided to reply for fun and see how far he would actually take it. Well… here’s the entire thread in all its glory. Enjoy.. and let this be a lesson….. (This could be a long one!)

It all started with:

Dear Mr.Mackenzie,

This information that I am about to reveal to you might either destroy me, ruin my professional career or make me, depending on how you received and take it, the future and happiness of my family depends on it. Please I need you to read this mail attentively to know the reason and purpose why you received this mail from me, I didn’t come to you by chance nor by accident, I have come to you because your names has planted you in the centre of relevant in my life and my professional career as a banker at this very moment. Before I go further to introduce myself to you I would like to plead with you to delete and not expose this information if you are not interested.

I am Mr.Harold Akaego,a managing director and head of international private banking division of BNP PARIBAS Investment Bank-Cote d’Ivoire-CIB CI. I am contacting you concerning a deceased client (Late Mr.Ron Marlon Chiu), and an investment he placed under our bank’s management 3 years ago. I would respectfully request that you keep the contents of this mail confidential and respect the integrity of the information you come by as a result of this mail.I contact you independently and no one is informed of this communication.

I would like to intimate you with certain facts that I believe would be of interest to you. In 2006, the subject matter came to our bank to engage in business discussions with our private banking division.. He informed us that he had a financial portfolio of 26.7 million Euro, which he wished to have us turn over (invest) on his behalf. I was the officer assigned to his case; I made numerous suggestions in line with my duties as the de-facto chief operations officer of the private banking sector, especially given the volume of funds he wished to put into our bank. We spun the money around various opportunities and made attractive margins for our first months of operation, the accrued profit and interest stood at this time at over 6 million Euros, this margin was not the full potential of the fund but he desired low risk guaranteed returns on his investments. In mid 2006, he asked that the money be liquidated because he needed to make an urgent investment requiring cash payments. He directed that I liquidate the funds and have it deposited with a security firm in Abidjan.

I undertook all the processes and made sure I followed his precise instructions to the letter and had the funds deposited with a security consultancy firm in Abidjan as he had directed. This security firm is especially private firms that accept deposits from high net worth individuals and blue chip corporations that handles valuable products or undertake transactions that need immediate access to cash. This small and highly private organization is familiar especially to the highly placed and well-connected organizations. In Line with instructions, the money was deposited with them. He told me he wanted the money there in anticipation of his arrival from France later that week. This was the last communication we had, this transpired around 27th June 2006. In October 2008 we got a call from the security company informing us of the inactivity of that particular portfolio.

This was an astounding position as far as I was concerned, given the fact that I managed the private banking sector I was the only one who knew about the deposit at the security company, and I could not understand why our client had not gone forward to claim his deposit. I made futile efforts to locate him. I immediately passed the task of locating him to the internal investigations department. Four days later, information started to trickle in, apparently our man was dead. If you are familiar with private banking affairs, those who patronize our services usually prefer anonymity, but also some levels of detachment from conventional processes.

In his bio-data form, he listed no next of kin. In the field of private banking, opening an account with us means no one will know of its existence, accounts are rarely held under a name; depositors use numbers and codes to make the accounts anonymous. It is this investigation that resulted in my being furnished with your details as a possible relative of the deceased because of the similarity in your last names. My official capacity dictates that I am the only party to supervise the investigation and the only party to receive the results of the investigation. It is quite clear now that our dear fellow died with no known or identifiable family members.

This leaves me as the only person with the full picture of what the prevailing situation is in relation to the deposit and the late beneficiary of the deposit. According to practice, the security company will however broadcast a request for statements of claim to BNP PARIBAS Investment Bank-Cote d’Ivoire-CI, failing to receive viable claims they will most probably revert the deposit to BNP PARIBAS Investment Bank-Cote d’Ivoire-CI. This will result in the money entering the BANK Private Bank accounting system and the portfolio will be out of my hands and out of the private banking division.

This will not happen if I have my way with you. What I wish to relate to you will smack of unethical practice but I want you to understand something. It is only an outsider to the banking world who finds the internal politics of the banking world aberrational. The world of private banking especially is fraught with huge rewards for those who sit upon certain chairs and oversee certain portfolios. You should have begun by now to put together the general direction of what I propose. There is 26.7 million Euro deposited in a security company in Abidjan. I alone have the deposit details and they will release the deposit to no one unless I instruct them to do so.I alone know of the existence of this deposit for as far as BNP PARIBAS Investment Bank-Cote d’Ivoire-CI.,is concerned, the transaction with the late customer concluded when I sent the funds to the security company in Abidjan, all outstanding interactions in relation to the file are just customer services and due process. The security company has no single idea of what’s the history or nature of the deposit. They are simply awaiting instructions to release the deposit to any party that I may direct. This is the situation. I will simply nominate you as the next of kin and have them release the deposit to you. We share the proceeds 50/50. You with the same very last name as the original depositor would easily pass as the beneficiary with right to claim.

The alternative would be for us to have the security company direct the funds to another bank with you as account holder. This way there will be no need for you to think of receiving the money directly from the security company as it is not a conventional financial institution; they accept deposits from only organizations thus; what you hand over to them is what you get back. They do not have the means to process the money. I am not a criminal and what I do, I do not find against good conscience, this may be hard for you to understand, but the dynamics of my industry dictates that I make this move. Such opportunities only come once in a life time. I cannot let this chance pass me by. For once I find myself in total control of my destiny.

If you will not work with me let me know and let me move on with my life, I am a family man and this is an opportunity to provide them with new opportunities. There is a reward for this project and it is a task well worth undertaking. I have evaluated the risks and the only risk I have here is from you refusing to work with me and alerting my bank. I am the only one who knows of this situation, good fortune has blessed you with a name that has planted you in the centre of relevance in my life. Let’s share the blessing.

If you find yourself able to work with me, contact me through this email. If you give me positive signals, I will give you the relevant details and initiate this process towards a conclusion. I do not want any direct link between you and me. My official lines are not secure lines as they are periodically monitored to assess our level of customer care in line with our total Quality Management Policy.

Please observe this instruction religiously. Do not betray my confidence in you.
I await your response.
Mr.Harold Akaego.

Dear Mr. Harold Akaego

Interesting… Tell me more.

Dear Mackenzie Chiu,

It was a pleasure to have received your email; I would have expected that you provide me with a telephone number to call you as  i would have really want to speak with you on the phone to be able to really explain details of this project to you. The steps are normally that, you are supposed to send a message by fax, telex or email to the statue of account verification department of our bank, stating that your relative  of – Mr.Rudi Marc Chui who has passed away and that during your review of his personal documents it was uncovered that he held a trust with our bank that the bank should please confirm the status of this account to you and the procedure to restitute it back to your family. I will propose a text to you in a separate mail.

Immediately you as the family of the deceased person opens contact with the bank, normally the bank will request that you provide all the decuments issued to the depositor when he deposit the money which are commonly referred to by we the bankers as ” Deposit related documents” all of which I will make available to you and you in turn, forward to the bank officially to authenticate the claim. The bank would also require to see extract of the death certificate of your deceased relative that certifies that he is truly dead.

So because you may not be able to arrange for a death certificate from your country, we have to follow a different approach by involving a resident lawyer here, who you will now swear an affidavit and make declaration of the death of your relative in the probate section of high court and subsequently obtain and/or procure the required death certificate of your deceased relative in support of the deposit related documents covering the trust/funds to be submit to the bank. Whatever charges related to the legal services, we shall both handle it.

This is in summary and what I was trying to convey to you in ly first email some days ago. Please acknowledge receipt of this mail and should you have any question after going through, please do not hesitate to let me know, I shall send to you in a seperate mail the proposed mail I drafted which is called an application for claim which you are to edit and send to the bank in a seperate mail. Remain Bless.

Yours truly,
Mr.Harold AKAEGO
